Luck!

Why do some people get all the luck while others never get the breaks they deserve?
A psychologist says he has discovered the answer. Ten years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at the right time, while others consistently experience ill fortune.
I placed advertisements in national newspapers asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky to contact me. Hundreds of extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research and, over the years, I have interviewed them, monitored their lives and had them take part in experiments.
The results reveal that although these people have almost no insight into the causes of their luck, their thoughts and behavior are responsible for much of their good and bad fortune. Take the case of seemingly chance opportunities. Lucky people consistently encounter such opportunities, whereas unlucky people do not.
I carried out a simple experiment to discover whether this was due to differences in their ability to spot such opportunities. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying: "Tell the experimenter you have seen this and win £250." This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more than two inches high. It was staring everyone straight in the face, but the unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it.
Unlucky people are generally tenser than lucky people, and this anxiety disrupts their ability to notice the unexpected. As a result, they miss opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else. They go to parties, intent on finding their perfect partner and so miss opportunities to make good friends. They look through newspapers determined to find certain types of job advertisements and miss out their types of jobs. Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for.
My research eventually revealed that lucky people generate good fortune via four principles. They are skilled at creating and noticing hence opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition, create self-fulfilling prophesies via positive expectations, and adopt a resilient attitude that transforms bad luck into good.
Towards the end of the work, I wondered whether these principles could be used to create good luck. I asked a group of volunteers to spend a month carrying out exercises designed to help them think and behave like a lucky person. Dramatic results. These exercises helped them spot chance opportunities, listen to their intuition, expect to be lucky, and be more resilient to bad luck. One month later, the volunteers returned and described what had happened. The results were dramatic: 80% of people were now happier, more satisfied with their lives and, perhaps most important of all, luckier. The lucky people had become even luckier and the unlucky had become lucky. Finally, I had found the elusive "luck factor".
Here are Professor Wiseman's four top tips for becoming lucky:

How to tie a "TIE"

A vey essential part of getting ready for an interview is to tie a "Tie". The tying of tie is an art and is well practiced mostly all over the too get a professional look. When sit for an interview in any company you are suppose to wear your dress in a very professional way. The dress should be such that it must reflect your professional you through your looks. Generally , any white or light shaded shirt with a black or matching trouser looks good.The belt used must be matching with the color of the trouser . The shoes must be black or matching with the trousers.No sports shoes are generally to be used. Hairs well trimmed looks better and descent. All of us, at some point in our lives, have made one or two-pagers on ourselves, maybe for a prospective employer, or maybe for a prospective educational institution we have been looking to join. But do we ever really bother to find out the fine art of writing your life out on a piece of paper in a way to look appealing and interesting to those reading it?

Some of us call it a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and some call it a Resume, but is there any real difference between the two or are they just different terminology comingfrom different parts of the world. Well, that maybe partially correct, but then there are finer differences between the two that set the two apart from each other. Differences in size, shape, function and contents, set it apart to those who wish to be aware.

Resume

“A resume is typically a one pager, which gives the prospective employer an overview of the candidate, whereas a CV is a detailed resume, which gives you much more detail. It is typically around 2-3 pages long and includes details such as details of papers published or projects headed etc.,” says Saumya Sarin, a recruitment consultant with ABC Consulting, a leading recruitment firm in India.

CV

CV, or Curriculum Vitae (a latin word), is an account of your entire education and employment history, translating to 'course of life', and it really is that - a record of your working life so far. Just as in a resume, the CV should include your name, contact information, education, skills and experience. In addition to these basics, a CV must also include research and teaching experience, publications, grants and fellowships, professional associations and licenses, awards and other information relevant to the position you are applying for. To cut a long story short, a CV contains all the details that are omitted from the resume, for the purpose of making it crisp, precise and an overview. It must also include backup documentation such as a copy of a recent publication, in case it is critical to display level of knowledge.

How much is too much information

The goal of a resume is to be able to, briefly and concisely, put across the qualifications and experience of the candidate.“The resume reader should be expected to spend around a minute or so reviewing the resume; this should be the bench-mark of how much to put in a resume,” adds Saumya. A CV, on the other hand, is normally used in academic settings and contains your chronological education history. It also contains your employment history, a list of your published works, or details or projects headed and durations and time periods for which the same continued. The idea is to get an in-depth idea into your knowledge levels.

Practically speaking

“A CV is typically appreciated by an employer who is looking to hire someone with technical skills or someone for a research role, where every little bit of information about the candidate helps ascertain the quality of the candidate,” says Shweta Sood, a business development manager working with Monster India, a leading recruitment firm in India. Since you’re adding that extra piece of information, while making a CV it makes sense to start by making a list of all your background information and then organizing it into categories. Dates anddurations of studies/projects/fellowships undertaken must be mentioned.

The difference between a CV and a resume primarily lies in its length, content and purpose. To put it in a nut shell, a resume focuses on specific achievements and result oriented responsibilities whereas a CV goes into detail with regards to experience / job responsibilities. The idea is to think from the employer’s point of view and identify the level of information he would be looking for while making his decision. It is always better to make both the versions, so that you will always have the correct document to hand out for that all-important interview.

10 secrets about working in IT

If you are preparing for a career in IT or are new to the industry, many of the "secrets" listed below may surprise you, because we don't usually talk about them out loud. If you are an IT veteran, you've probably encountered most of these issues and have a few of your own to add--and please, by all means, take a moment to add them to the discussion.Most of these secrets are aimed at network administrators, IT managers and desktop support professionals. This list is not aimed at developers and programmers--they have their own set of dirty little secrets--but some of these will apply to them as well.
1. The pay in IT is good compared to many other professions, but since they pay you well, they often think they own you Although the pay for IT professionals is not as great as it was before the dot-com flameout and the IT backlash in 2001-2002, IT workers still make very good money compared to many other professions.And there is every reason to believe that IT pros will continue to be in demand in the coming decades, as technology continues to play a growing role in business and society.However, because IT professionals can be so expensive, some companies treat IT pros like they own them. If you have to answer a tech call at 9pm because someone is working late, you hear: "That's just part of the job." If you need to work six hours on a Saturday to deploy a software update to avoid downtime during business hours, you get: "There's no time off in lieu for that since you're on salary. That's why we pay you the big money!"
2. It will be your fault when users make silly errorsSome users will angrily snap at you when they are frustrated. They will yell: "What's wrong with this thing?" or "This computer is not working!" or "What did you do to the computers?" In fact, the problem is that they accidentally deleted the Internet Explorer icon from the desktop, or unplugged the mouse from the back of the computer with their foot, or spilled their coffee on the keyboard.
3. You will go from villain to hero and back again multiple times within any given dayWhen you miraculously fix something that had been keeping multiple employees from being able to work for the past 10 minutes--and they don't realise how simple the fix really was--you will become the hero of the moment and everyone's favorite employee.
They will conveniently forget about your hero anointment a few hours later when they have trouble printing because of a network slowdown--you will become be enemy number one. But if you show users a handy little Microsoft Outlook trick before the end of the day, you'll swiftly return to hero status.
4. Certifications won't always help you become a better technologist, but they can help you land a better job or a pay raiseHeadhunters and human resources departments love IT certifications. They make it easy to match up job candidates with job openings. They also make it easy for HR to screen candidates. You'll hear a lot of veteran IT pros whine about techies who were hired based on certifications but who don't have the experience to do the job effectively.
They are often right. That has happened in plenty of places. But the fact is that certifications open up your career options. They show that you are organized and ambitious and have a desire to educate yourself and expand your skills.
If you are an experienced IT pro and have certifications to match your experience, you will find yourself to be extremely marketable. Tech certifications are simply a way to prove your baseline knowledge and to market yourself as a professional. However, they don't tend to be of them reliable indicators of how good you will be at the job.
5. Your non-technical co-workers will use you as personal tech support for their home PCsYour co-workers (in addition to your friends, family, and neighbors) will view you as their personal tech support department for their home PCs and home networks.
They will email you, call you, and/or stop by your office to talk about how to deal with the virus that took over their home PC, or the wireless router that stopped working after the last power outage, or how to put their photos and videos on the web. Some of them might even ask you if they can bring their home PC to the office for you to fix it. The polite ones will offer to pay you, but some of them will just hope or expect you can help them for free.
Helping these people can be very rewarding, but you have to be careful about where to draw the line and know when to decline.
Who takes the credit?
6. Vendors and consultants will take all the credit when things work well, and blame you when things go wrongWorking with IT consultants is an important part of the job and can be one of the more challenging things to manage.
Consultants bring niche expertise to help you deploy specialized systems, and when everything works right, it's a great partnership. But you have to be careful. When things go wrong, some consultants will try to put the blame on you by arguing that their solution works great everywhere else so it must be a problem with the local IT infrastructure.
Conversely, when a project is wildly successful, there are consultants who will try to take all of the credit and ignore the substantial work you did to customize and implement the solution for your company.
7. You'll spend far more time babysitting old technologies than implementing new ones
One of the most attractive things about working in IT is the idea that we'll get to play with the latest, cutting-edge technologies.
However, that's rarely the case in most IT jobs. The truth is that IT professionals typically spend far more time maintaining, babysitting and nursing established technologies than implementing new ones.Even IT consultants, who work with more of the latest and greatest technologies, still tend to work primarily with established, proven solutions rather than the real cutting-edge stuff.
8. Veteran IT professionals are often the biggest roadblock to implementing new technologiesA lot of companies could implement more cutting-edge stuff than they do. There are plenty of times when upgrading or replacing software or infrastructure can potentially save money and/or increase productivity and profitability.However, it's often the case that one of the largest roadblocks to migrating to new technologies is not budget constraints or management objections; it's the veteran techies in the IT department. Once they have something up and running, they are reluctant to change it.This can be a good thing because their jobs depend on keeping the infrastructure stable, but they also use that as an excuse to not spend the time to learn new things or stretch themselves in new directions. They get lazy, complacent, and self-satisfied.
9. Some IT professionals deploy technologies that do more to consolidate their own power than help the businessAnother subtle but blameworthy thing that some IT professionals do is select and implement technologies based on how well those technologies make the business dependent on the IT pros to run them, rather than which ones are truly best for the business itself.
For example, IT pros might select a solution that requires specialized skills to maintain instead of a more turnkey solution. Or an IT manager might have more of a Linux/Unix background and so chooses a Linux-based solution over a Windows solution, even though the Windows solution is a better business decision (or, vice versa, a Windows admin might bypass a Linux-based appliance, for example).There are often excuses and justifications given for this type of behavior, but most of them are disingenuous.
10. IT pros frequently use jargon to confuse non-technical business managers and hide the fact that they screwed upAll IT pros--even the very best--screw things up once in a while. This is a profession where a lot is at stake and the systems that are being managed are complex and often difficult to integrate.
However, not all IT pros are good at admitting when they make a mistake. Many take advantage of the fact that business managers (and even some high-level technical managers) don't have a good understanding of technology, and so the techies will use jargon to confuse them (and cover up the truth) when explaining why a problem or an outage occurred.
For example, to tell a business manager why a financial application went down for three hours, the techie might say: "We had a blue screen of death on the SQL Server that runs that app. Damn Microsoft!" What the techie would fail to mention was that the BSOD was caused by a driver update he applied to the server without first testing it on a staging machine.

India's short of IT managers

Its sheer population, coupled with sound government policies and an education system that emphasizes mathematics and science, have all contributed to the spectacular growth of India's IT industry. According to Nasscom, India's national association of software and service companies, about 19 million students are currently enrolled in high schools and 10 million students in pre-graduate degree courses across India. While nearly 3 percent of them find jobs in other fields, the rest opt for employment in the IT industry.

If the flow from high schools to graduate courses increases even marginally, there will be a massive increase in the number of skilled workers available to the industry. Even at current rates, there will be an estimated 17 million people available to the IT industry by 2008, according to Nasscom's projections.

But even with the surge in manpower supply, India is likely to face a shortage of IT managers with the required broad range of skills, going by the results of ZDNet Asia's IT Salary Survey. For example, just 11.5 percent of survey respondents have experience in infrastructure management, while more than 60 percent are better versed in application development.

In line with regional salary trends, the survey found that those with IT management skills command a higher salary in India. The average annual salary of those with more than 10 years experience was 140 percent higher than those with five to 10 years experience. This suggests that IT managers' salaries tend to grow substantially as they accumulate relevant experience over the long term, as well as a possible shortage of very experienced IT managers, which would then lead to higher salaries. One interesting observation, however, is that the IT management job function does not command the highest average annual salaries among respondents with 10 years or less experience.

IT pays

The best-paid jobs in India seem to be in the IT, Web and Telecom sectors. The average annual salary of respondents is Rs 687,401 (US$15,259) compared with Rs 405,587 (US$9,003) in government, education and health. Indian IT workers in media, marketing and sales earned the lowest across all IT job functions, except IT Management, which command the second highest average annual salary of Rs 1,342,857 (US$30,757).

Rohit Chattree, director for information technology at human resource company Adecco, told ZDNet Asia that the manpower shortage has pushed up India's IT wages in general, and this has started to erode the country's competitive advantage. "This has made organizations sit back and think about India's cost advantages that India had about three to four years back," he said. To maintain India's competitive edge, IT workers have started to move up the value chain, according to Chattree. "For organizations to continue to benefit from India's cost advantage, IT workers have to do work that involves higher-end skills and resources," he explained.

Key findings of ZDNet Asia's IT Salary Benchmark 2006 Survey

To gain insights into Asia's IT workforce and salary trends, ZDNet Asia conducted a survey on the Internet between Aug. 25 and Nov. 6, 2006. The survey drew 5,090 respondents from industry sectors such as government, healthcare, IT, services, telecommunications, legal and finance, across seven Asian countries: Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

The survey drew 1,389 respondents across several IT positions, which are broadly categorized into IT management, project development and systems development.

Phonetics

Phonetics is the study of the way human makes sound during the speech.The phonetics is concerned with the properties of sounds made during speech and how they are generated.Some special notations other than the alphabets of English are used to denote various sounds that has to be generated to pronounce any particular word.So, it is used with some symbols and examples to guide the speakers to pronounce any word in the correct way.The Alphabets which are used are called phonetics alphabets.The word phonetics comes from the Greek word φωνή, phone meaning 'sound'.

So, hundreds of these 'phones' are recognized by an organization called the International Phonetic Association (IPA) and listed under International Phonetic Alphabets.

Phonetics was studied as early as 2,500 years ago in ancient India, with Pāṇini's account of the place and manner of articulation of consonants in his 5th century BCE treatise on Sanskrit. The major Indic alphabets today, except Tamil script, order their consonants according to Pāṇini's classification.

Nowadays, all the organizations has to compete on world level.Gone are the days even for many government organizations where there was no or very little competition from anywhere outside the country.This is equally true for all the countries.This has made many previously well known anti-English or strictly non-English countries to adopt the language for business.Languages are means of communication and English is a language that is used the most to connect people from all the regions of world.

The importance of phonetics emerges out here.On international level if the organizations are working they need people competent in that way also.Companies are looking now for people good in technology or their field of knowledge and having good communication skills too.The person must be good enough to at least explain the work he has done to people anywhere on globe.He/she must be adaptable enough to work in cross cultural groups.This depends on other things also like team working capabilities and interpersonal skills etc.But without good communication it is very difficult to achieve .This is not only beneficial for the hiring organizations but the people working there are also benefited.Due to this it has become much easier now to get a job anywhere in the WORLD.The boundaries have expanded or say no boundaries are there for getting a job.The communication not only has effect on job prospects but working in a cross cultural environment helps the society also to evolve.The less developed societies and groups are coming close to the more evolved ones and they also grow with them.

Phonetics is a very important component of this communication.One must pronounce the words in a correct way.However , some local/regional accent is natural.But, still people having neutral accent are more preferred.So, if you pronounce a word in a more clear and standard way it becomes neutral accent pronunciation and more easily understood by people anywhere on the Globe.





Now ,again one must be very clear about the phonetics is that "no one is perfect".The people who work with it on daily basis or regular basis are the best.So the key towards a great phonetics is only one and it is "practice","Practice" and "Practice".We are normally adapted to listen and speak in a certain accent ,the accent we are listening since our birth.That particular accent has a deep effect.We are comfortable listening certain sounds and naturally produce some typical sounds or phonetics.This is the regional phonetic or the regional accent.To come over it and develop a good phonetic [neutral] is more of coming out of one mental frame and adapting a another.We slowly by practice train ourself to be more comfortable in listening and pronouncing the new phonetics.So, one must not be afraid of the time factor.Some people learn initially very fast and some later.It is only due to what exposure they have previously.By practicing and determination it is possible to learn any knowledge and it is true for the language English also.

Practicing definitely needs practicing in correct direction.For that many helps are available as local institutions providing phonetic classes and definitely your college soft skills faculty.The best way as I told above is practice.This adapts your tongue to learn to twist-and-dance in a very stylish way.The best way is to speak-speak and speak. I know you love your friends very much and just do not want to kill him listening your uncontrolled bombastically spelled words.So, every day take some time off from your studies/work and your friends too.Take a good English news paper.Do regular reading , pronounce the words and it will be better if you go and practice before a mirror also sometimes.

The role of communication is known to everyone.We the humans are blessed with two characters that make us the kings and queens of all his creation.

1.We have freed our hands from walking and created a new world for us.
2.We can communicate most effectively than any creature on earth other than us .

Many stories and examples are there to explain and prove that a right word must be used at right time.One word can put someone in biggest of trouble.One of the major obstacles in communication is lack of knowledge and practice of any language [English here].Lack of practice is more big a problem.

The Night Before The First Job Interview

Ah! what shall I read millions of books are there on each topic what on earth he will ask.I don't know anything man.What if the interviewer might be expert in the subject/domain I know the least.Do I even look like an IT professional.Whole night before the interview was very dramatic.C,Data Structures,DBMS/SQL,Networking,Unix,Operating System,OO Concepts and what else.What shall I study .Oh ! my lord please make todays night at least 24 hour long.How come I will answer with confidence when each drop of it has vaporized tonight.Hey ! Birjit has found some nice material on net.Let us go and see what is it.We must not miss any information tonight.

Cram! Cram! Cram! oh my Lord.

See outside man it's already getting bright outside.My God it's 5'O' clock.So much still to be read.So much still to be discussed.So much still to be touched also for the first time.Hey! what is this? I forgot to shave last night.I had planned to do it after dinner.But , suddenly Mayank came with a question and none of us had ever heard of that stuff.Tic-Tok-Tic gone 2 hours after the question.Some how reached at some conclusion and got rid of it.

I must shave now.My electric shaver takes 30 minutes to cut the grass.Where is the shaver.It's here over the JAVA book.Let us go now .One minute.I forgot to read RMI in Java .Leave it dude go for it now.Opened the book but can't find it.Anyone here knows where is it.All the blank faces.Someone said I think we have seen it in one of our semesters and maybe in the Java book.What an intelligent answer.Anyway searched crammed packed it.We are experts in completing the job of exam preparation within the deadline.What if we start it just before the deadline. :)

Oh! its 6 'O' Clock and sir has asked to reach us by 7.Rush baby rush or you are gone.

Finally, all done and ready with a perfect white shirt and black trouser .Ya the Tie also .Shining black shoes and matching socks and belt.We know every thing.The dress code for interview we were learning from the initial semesters.We are not dumbs.Finally, on our way to college campus.All sleepy eyes and bright dreams gentlemen in perfect traditional uniform of unemployed. Half way the college campus , ishhhh !!! forgot the resume/CV , someone forgot to take the pictures . "RUN " the only option.

Finally , reached the college.

This could happen with anyone or might have happened with many [more or less].The reason to mention it over here to explain some of the pre-interview phobias.One can be much better prepared for the placement procedure if the right preparation is done at right time.This all happens due to inexperience.The root of all this is lack of practical experience.The situation is like you have a bag full of weapons.You are standing in a pitch black african forest.Everywhere dangerous animals are there.Man eating tribes are there.But, what is the benifit of having such a large number of weapons.We can't see where to fire the gun.We do not know the forest.No idea about anything . We fire all the bullets in the direction no one is there and at correct time the enemy comes and takes us by surprise.If some of us still survive he/she learns more about the place and the people and then is in a better if not best position.

But, one more better option can be there.Take a guide with you.He knows much much more about the place and the trends.We can use our labour,work,skills and determination with the correct guidance and can thus win in the very first attempt.

This is what is the purpose of this site.We will share mutually our knowledge and experiences and help each other in this forest .I send you my dear friends my best wishes for your future and expect the same here.It is said also that,"WELL STARTED IS HALF DONE".

[For Students of ISIT:
I would like to first congratulate you all for two reasons.Firstly,for joining ISIT and secondly for joining the MCA course.This warm corner in the ocean of millions and millions of web pages on internet is the corner for us to learn to swim in the vast ocean of technology.In future I hope large number of current students and alumni will use this page.The purpose is definitely to help our students [ISITians] towards their preparation for a good placement.]

Friends we all know that experiences are very precious so the people who have already been through this placement ceremony [or Drill] definitely have some experience regarding this.Many of us in our batch , we have written many selection papers and faced several interviews and GD's.So why not just make a common space where we all can share our experiences with the newer members of our family.

Before I write my concluding line I would like to inform you that recently COO,WIPRO Mr.AL Rao was interviewed by CYBERMEDIADICE .The interview as per my opinion is a must to watch for all the students.Mr. AL Rao has speaked on various topics including about the interview procedure and requirement in general as required by any recruiter.The interview is available as WEBCAST and TEXT.
